When Reeling in Deep-Sea Fish, Don't Forget the Right Tools to Save Them

As anglers, we often get excited when reeling in a big catch from the depths of the ocean. However, fish that live at or near the bottom can be prone to a condition called barotrauma, which occurs when the gases in their swim bladder expand too quickly and cause physical distress.

Barotrauma is similar to decompression sickness, also known as 'the bends,' experienced by scuba divers who ascend too quickly without proper decompression. When fish are reeled in from depths of 50 feet or more, the dissolved gases in their bodies can't be released quickly enough, leading to bulging eyes, bloated stomachs, and other physical symptoms.

Fortunately, there are specialized tools that can help alleviate this condition and ensure a safe release back into the water. The most effective tool is a venting device, which is a hollow needle inserted into the swim bladder at a 45-degree angle just behind the pectoral fins. This releases the trapped gases, allowing the fish to return to its natural state.

Another option is a descending tool, designed specifically for reef fishing species such as snappers, groupers, grunts, and triggerfish. These devices are typically weighted containers or hooks attached to the fish lip or gill cover, which slowly lower the fish back down to at least 50 feet of water.

Recreational anglers in Gulf of Mexico federal waters (9-plus nautical miles offshore) or Florida state waters on either side of the Keys must have one of these two tools onboard and readily available when targeting reef fish. In Atlantic Ocean federal waters, all recreational, commercial, and for-hire vessels are required to carry a working descending device.
